Winnebago County Field Trip Ideas

Anderson Gardens - Home Page - 318 Spring Creek Road, Rockford, IL 61107,, 815/229-9390.  Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m; Sunday noon to 4 p.m.  $5/adult; $4/senior; $3/student; free/child 4 years old or younger.
Burpee Museum of Natural History - 737 North Main Street, Rockford, IL 61103, 815/965-3433.  Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday noon to 5 p.m.  Open on Mondays that are Rockford school holidays and during the summer.  Barnes Mansion not always available - call first.  $5/adult; $4/child 3-17 years.
Two hour classes available for ages 6-14, Two sessions offered Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1pm-3pm beginning September 12th and 14th. The theme varies each month. Call 815-965-3433 x 1020 for info. A high school level Earth Science class (year long) will be offered on Wednesday mornings, from 10:00-11:30.

Discovery Center Museum - Riverfront Museum Park, 711 North Main Strreet, Rockford, IL 61103,  815/963-6769.  Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.(Mondays too if Rockford Public Schools are closed); Sunday noon to 5 p.m.  $4/adult; $3/child; group rate available for groups of 10 or more with at least 10 days advance reservation.  Classes geared to homeschoolers (for an additional charge).  Loads of hands-on learning activities.
Ethnic Heritage Museum - 1129 South Main Street, Rockford, IL,  815/962-7402.  Sundays 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.  $2/adult; $1/child.  Preservation of ethnic heritage of Irish, Italians, African-Americans, Polish, Lithuanians and Hispanics in the Rockford area.
Klehm Arboretum - 2701 Clifton Ave., Rockford, IL,  815/965-8146.  Daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Summer hours Memorial Day through Labor Day 9 a.m. to  8 p.m.  Call for holiday hours.  $2/person.  Botanical Ed. Center, demonstration gardens (including butterfly garden, day lily garden, and more), children's garden, and more.  Call or see web site for upcoming special events and classes.
Lockwood Park and Trailside Equestrian Center - 5209 Safford Road, Rockford, IL,  815/987-8809.  Petting corral, riding trails, observatory, and other outdoor activities.

Rock Cut State Park - 7318 Harlem Road, Loves Park, IL 61111, 815/885-3311.  Camping, hiking, swimming (at Olson Lake only), picnicking, hiking, and more.  Call for hours of operation and admission info.
Rockford Art Museum - Rockford Museum Park, 711 N Main Street, RRockford, IL  61103, 815/968-2787.  20th Century American art.  Temporary exhibits of regional contemporary art.  Classes available for children and adults.  Call for further info.
Rockford Dance Company - Rockford Museum Park, 711 N. Main Street, Rockford, IL  61103, 815/963-3341.  Ballet performances and dance classes (ballet, tap, folk, etc.).  Call for ticket info and class schedule/fees.
Rockford Symphony Orchestra - 815/965-0049.  Professional symphony performing classical and pops; youth symphony opportunities, youth performances, and instrument demonstrations (for schools).  Call for ticket and performance location info.
Severson Dells Environmental Education Center - 8786 Montague Rd., Rockford, IL,  61102, 815-335-2915.  Educational programs, nature trails, special outdoor events.  Call for hours and admission info.
Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum - 411 Kent Street, Rockford, IL  61102, 815/964-2424.  Tours Tuesday through Sunday at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m.  Groups of 8 or more should call for reservations.  Historic home with butler's pantry, children's rooms, and more. Winnebago County Forest Preserve - 36 different forest preserves throughout the county.  Camping, picnicking, hiking, boating, fishing and much more.  See web site for details on locations, hours, and other information.
